Over the years, we've spent a surprising amount of time explaining why 1+1=3 isn't completely bad math...
"I don't get it," said the woman in line ahead of us. "You guys can't do math, or what?" We get asked about our logo all the time. A lot. And that's OK with us because, let's face it, logos are supposed to be memorable. The problem is, a whole lot of people think ours is just wrong.
Well, we beg to differ. Sure, in one way of looking at it--in, say, a Base 10 system like our world tends to use--well, OK, it might be considered wrong. But we prefer to think in a little less provincial terms. In other words, we prefer to dream up ways it could be considered right, rather than concentrate the negative ("...that's like, you know, like, such negative energy, man...").
Here, then, are our Top Ten (or so) best explanations for why our logo isn't completely bad math...
Hey, we're software consultants. In binary (the language of computers), 11 is three.
We designed it on one of the original Pentium machines (it's a minor rounding error that you wouldn't incur in the normal course of business).
It represents synergy, the idea that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts and, not incidentally, something Teamwork Solutions brings to your projects.
It makes for great conversational fodder at cocktail parties.
You mean it's wrong?
Creative accounting (you should see our tax returns).
It symbolizes the ultimate benefit of doing great work: markup.
As Thomas Edison once said: "there are no rules here--we're trying to accomplish something."
We have adopted a shortened version of the motto of the Board of Elections of the state of Florida. The full motto reads:
1 + 1 = 3. . .or four. . .or. . .well, whatever.
A wise man once said, "The only constant is change itself." If that is so, then perhaps one is not always one, but sometimes one is two. Thus, one plus one equals three if one one was a one when it was two. It's all about timing, really.
One plus one is not three? It depends on what your definition of "is" is.
Sure it makes sense: that's how you get children...
